Altered state of corporal consciousness related to alien hand syndrome and schizophrenic motor passivity.

چکیده

Some patients with schizophrenia present a related phenomenon in which they believe their limbs are under the control of an alien force (motor passivity).5 There are some attempts to elucidate the nature and mechanism of passivity phenomena (experiences that one’s conscious actions or thoughts have not been ‘willed’ by oneself) wich include the dysfunction of an internal self-monitoring system that normally enables the distinction between internally generated actions and external influences on intentional behavior. Motor imagery is the mental simulation of specific motor actions and it is based upon the internal representation of intended but unexecuted motor actions.5 We propose, therefore, that alien limb phenomenon can represent a very bizarre kind of altered state of body consciousness related to a right hemisphere disturbance and that they share symptomatological characteristics and possible pathogenic grounds with the schizophrenic motor passivity.

A PET study of voluntary movement in schizophrenic patients experiencing passivity phenomena (delusions of alien control).

Schizophrenic patients experiencing passivity phenomena believe their thoughts and actions to be those of external, or alien, entities. We wished to test the hypothesis that voluntary motor action in such patients would be associated with aberrant patterns of activation within the cerebral motor system. We used H2(15)O PET to study patients while they performed paced joystick movements on two o...

Looking for the agent: an investigation into consciousness of action and self-consciousness in schizophrenic patients.

The abilities to attribute an action to its proper agent and to understand its meaning when it is produced by someone else are basic aspects of human social communication. Several psychiatric syndromes, such as schizophrenia, seem to lead to a dysfunction of the awareness of one's own action as well as of recognition of actions performed by others. Such syndromes offer a framework for studying ...

The alien hand and related signs.

Alien limb sign includes failure to recognise ownership of one's limb when visual cues are removed, a feeling that one body part is foreign, personification of the affected body part, and autonomous activity which is perceived as outside voluntary control. Although the hand is most frequently affected, any limb or combination of limbs may fulfil the alien limb criteria. Alien hand sign should b...

Alien Hand Syndrome: Neural Correlates of Movements without Conscious Will

BACKGROUND The alien hand syndrome is a striking phenomenon characterized by purposeful and autonomous movements that are not voluntarily initiated. This study aimed to examine neural correlates of this rare neurological disorder in a patient with corticobasal degeneration and alien hand syndrome of the left hand. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We employed functional magnetic resonance imagin...

Moving with or without will: functional neural correlates of alien hand syndrome.

Alien hand syndrome is a rare neurological disorder in which movements are performed without conscious will. By using functional magnetic resonance imaging in a patient with alien hand syndrome after right parietal lesion, we could identify brain regions activated during involuntary or voluntary actions with the affected left hand. Alien hand movements involved a selective activation of contral...
